A practice in less doomscrolling, more discernment, and cultivating IRL skills
In a world where we are chronically online (umm hi), there is this insatiable craving for real life percolating amongst us. It’s in the air; it is almost palpable, yet here we are still bumming around online — scrolling past a hundred strangers’ lives, a hundred recipes we crave to make, a hundred trips we want to take — hoping the next thing we find will finally scratch the itch. The digital world is our oyster, and if we scroll hard and fast enough, maybe we can numb our brain cells into thinking we’ve actually taken that magical trip to Vietnam without ever leaving the couch. That, my friends, is the good ole doomscroll in action.
We all know the feeling; it creeps in real slow, like a cat stalking its prey. Our eyes start to glaze over, and a blanket of dread gently drapes itself over our warm body. We are deep in our spiral, and we don’t know which way is up. It’s got a hold of us. Just. One. More. Reel. We plead with no one. Pleeeease, I need it! No one comes to rescue you, and eventually you pass out in a dazed stupor.
If it sounds relatable and awful, that’s because it is. No one is safe from this high-speed blender of consumption.
I am not leading a coup to burn down the internet, though; I love it here. Lots of learning, discovering, and expansion happens online. And sometimes it’s just pure, dumb fun — Exhibit A: Jimothy the short-spined raccoon, an internet sensation that brought us so much love and joy. I want us to actively choose to use the internet as the amazing tool that it is and not the drug that lives in our pocket.
But I am never one to pose a problem and not follow up with solutions.
The mission is simple: get more discerning about what we consume online, get more face-time with real people, cultivate more IRL skills. For us, that starts in the kitchen. Why? Because everybody’s got to eat.
Instead of scrolling for scrolling’s sake, pick a recipe to obsess over. Use the internet for what it’s actually good for — research, deep diving, getting inspired. Actually make the braised chicken recipe you saved months ago because you could feel your mouth watering at 11 pm on a Tuesday night. Then invite people over, toss your phone aside, and enjoy the damn chicken.
Butter Cult, assemble!
I’m leading the charge for us to get offline and into the kitchen. Who’s with me?!
